American wedding traditions have largely been practiced across the board. This means you’re likely to find many of the same ones at any American wedding. Moreover, they have been passed down from generation to generation. Admittedly, many couples do them just for the fun of it. Others follow them without really knowing why they exist. For instance, have you ever wondered why a bride carries a bouquet? Or why a groom tosses the garter? Well, find out about these wedding traditions that may already be planned for your wedding day.

Tradition #1: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue

This tradition lists four things a bride should have on her wedding day for good luck. Something old could be from the bride’s past life. Then, something new represents the couple’s happy future. Moreover, something borrowed entails incorporating an item from someone who is happily married.  The reason for this is so that the couple can rub off some good fortune from the older couple. Something blue represents the bride’s fidelity.

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. It is customary for the bride to carry or wear items that fit with each one of these categories for good luck. While for some this might fall into the category of funny wedding traditions, it certainly makes for a more interesting experience. Especially since these customs are quite significant. Something old signifies the family and friends at the wedding. Something new signifies the couple, something borrowed is a veil or other item from mother or aunt. And something blue signifies the bride’s purity or virginity. Read more from wedding forward

Tradition #2: Carrying the bridal bouquet

This age-old tradition is currently used to signify the bride’s emotions during the wedding. In the past, it used to be a bunch of herbs and spices whose strong aroma would off bad spirits from possessing the bride. Who would have thought it had such strong spooky connotations?

These days, brides are carrying peonies and roses down the aisle, but back in ancient Greece and Rome, it was all about herbs. During that time, it was en vogue to hold aromatic bouquets of garlic, dill, and other herbs and spices to ward off evil spirits. Thankfully, we’ve graduated from pungent herb bouquets to lush floral ones, often comprised of the bride’s favorite bloom. Carrying a favorite flower variety is a tradition that became popular in 1840, when Queen Victoria married Prince Albert and carried a bouquet of snowdrops, his favorite flower. Tradition #3: Tossing the garter

This was a sign that the marriage had been consummated. Nowadays it is a great game couples play with an excited crowd that also means good luck.

The groom after removing the garter from the bride would toss it to the single men. Then whoever caught it was believed to be the next one marrying.

Back in the Dark Ages, the garter was considered a hot item. It’s said that family and friends would wait outside the nuptial bedchamber until they were shown evidence—sheets, stockings, a garter—that the marriage had been consummated (seriously!). In time, the garter came to symbolize good luck, and rowdy guests began making a game of trying to strip the bride of that little fabric band. To distract the mob, brides began tossing it into the crowd. Today, the practice usually involves the groom throwing the garter to a group of single men; whoever catches it is believed to be the next to marry. Read more from Martha Stewart
